Omikron: RKI reports first death in Germany

In Germany, the first person died after being infected with the Omikron variant. The Robert Koch Institute reported that the deceased was younger than 80 years.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has confirmed the first death after infection with the omicron variant of the coronavirus. The deceased was between 60 and 79 years old, as explained in the. First the “” reported about it.

As of December 22nd, 3,198 Covid-19 cases are assigned to the Omikron variant. This corresponds to an increase in cases of 25 percent (plus 810 cases) compared to the previous day. Of these 3,198 Omicron cases, the overview showed that 48 people had to be treated in the hospital. 54 infections are reinfections, i.e. renewed infections with the coronavirus.

Only cases are counted for the data in which detection by means of whole genome sequencing or a laboratory diagnostic suspicion by means of variant-specific PCR showed an infection with Omikron. According to the RKI, the numbers are still subject to possible corrections and later changes.
