Drinking enough fluids is essential for the body to survive. If you drink a glass of water immediately after getting up in the morning, you will benefit from the following six advantages. 1. Toxins are flushed out. During sleep, the body recovers and breaks down toxins. A glass of water in the morning on an empty stomach helps flush the harmful substances out of the body. 2. The metabolism is stimulated. When we drink water, our body has to compensate for the difference in temperature and thereby produces heat. This stimulates the metabolism and digestion – more calories are burned. 3. The stomach is spared. Heartburn and upset stomach are caused by increased acidity in the stomach. A glass of water on an empty stomach in the morning dilutes the acid and thus prevents upset. 4. Kidney and bladder infections are prevented. Sufficient fluids flush toxins out of the body that could otherwise lead to inflammation in the kidneys or bladder. According to a US study, drinking 1.5 liters of water a day reduces cystitis by almost 50 percent. 5. Healthy skin and hair. A lack of water encourages the formation of wrinkles, pimples or impurities and makes the hair look dull and brittle. Even 500 ml of water on an empty stomach should promote blood circulation and make the skin glow. 6. The immune system is strengthened. Water on an empty stomach keeps the lymphatic system in balance – the body becomes less susceptible to pathogens and diseases. The German Nutrition Society recommends drinking at least 1.5 liters of water a day. But according to a Forsa survey, every second German drinks too little water. A tip: put a glass of water by your bed in the evening and drink it right after you wake up in the morning.
