Anyone standing by a bridge in Stockholm could find it: a QR code that offers help with suicidal thoughts. Two paramedics from Sweden developed it. Soon the codes should be found in many more places.
A QR code that saves lives? You can find it in the Swedish capital Stockholm. It was developed by a paramedic. Andréa Lindroos and Fredrik Eriksson are all too often confronted with suicide in their job. That’s why the two started the initiative for this project, as reported by Swedish television.
“We want to simplify the complicated path system. Here you do a single search,” says Eriksson about the idea. Because anyone who has acute thoughts of suicide and is looking for help often runs into problems, says Lindroos. This makes it more difficult for some to get ahead. Anyone who scans the QR code on a sticker with their smartphone will first be asked a question: “Are you thinking of suicide now?” If you answer yes to the question, you will see contact information and telephone numbers directly.
Developers don’t just want QR codes in Stockholm
The first stickers are to be attached to bridges in Stockholm, say Lindroos and Eriksson. If the two of them have their way, the stickers should soon be found in buses, at train stations, in schools and public toilets. Your wish: The QR code should spread across the whole country.
However, this is not possible without obstacles, as SVT further reports. Because you need a permit for that. The permit application is submitted to the police, who in turn forwards the application to the Stockholm City Permit Authority. Stickers, for example, are not welcome from a cleaning point of view.

Malinda Flodman from the capital’s tourist office told the broadcaster about a possible exception for the project: “Of course we don’t want anyone to commit suicide on Västerbron.” However, one cannot prefer anyone. “If the cooperation takes place across the region instead, it may be easier to implement.”
