Lose weight just by jogging? Unfortunately, that doesn’t work, says evolutionary biologist Herman Pontzer. Here he presents his surprising research results – and explains why exercise is still so important for us humans.
This interview comes from the stern archive and first appeared in June 2023.
Mr. Pontzer, many people exercise during these weeks to lose a few kilos. Is that the best way?
No, unfortunately it doesn’t help at all with losing weight.
Excuse me? I just ran a few kilometers here on the university campus. My fitness watch praised me because I burned 300 extra calories. I should lose some weight.
No, I have to disappoint you, that’s not how it works. If you are physically active and do sports, that doesn’t mean that you burn 300 calories more per day than someone who hasn’t done any sports. Even if your fitness tracker says so.
