The omicron variant of the coronavirus is currently having a huge impact internationally. France counts 208,000 new infections within one day. The USA and Denmark are also reporting negative records.
The number of new corona infections detected in France within one day has risen to around 208,000. “Looking at the numbers that we register, I tend to speak of a tidal wave,” said Health Minister Olivier Véran on Wednesday at the National Assembly in Paris. “Those are numbers that make me dizzy.” Every second two people in France would test positive for Corona. After Christmas, the government had already announced stricter corona rules. From January 15th, a 2G rule should apply in many areas of life. Tests are no longer enough.
USA reports record number of new corona infections
In the midst of the rapid spread of the Omikron variant, the USA has also reported a new maximum number of corona infections. According to figures from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on Wednesday, 265,427 corona cases were reported within 24 hours on a seven-day average. This exceeded the previous high of around 252,000 cases from last January.
However, the actual number of infections is likely to be significantly higher: Many infections go unnoticed or are only detected by tests at home, the results of which are not officially registered.
Numerous countries are currently experiencing a rapid increase in the number of infections due to the spread of the Omikron variant. In the USA, Omikron is now the predominant variant. In the past week, just under 59 percent of the cases were Omikron cases, according to the CDC. For the week before, the CDC had even given the number at 73.2 percent – but later corrected this to 22.5 percent.
Denmark has 23,228 new corona cases within 24 hours
In Denmark, too, the number of new infections has risen to a new high since the start of the pandemic. As the Danish health authority announced on Wednesday, 23,228 new cases of infection were registered within 24 hours. The previous high was reached on Monday with 16,164 new cases. The seven-day incidence is more than 1700, which is the highest in the world, ahead of Malta, Ireland, Iceland and the UK.

In Denmark, the Omikron variant has been the predominant coronavirus variant for over a week. According to the health authority, the new maximum value for new infections is mainly due to a very large number of PCR tests that were carried out after Christmas. The so-called positive rate, the proportion of positive corona tests, remained almost constant at 12.3 percent.
