A woman suddenly develops asthma. She can no longer walk. She becomes increasingly weaker and is in terrible pain. Finally, a doctor makes the rare diagnosis.
The woman in her mid-fifties arrived helpless in an ambulance at the emergency room of the clinic where I was working at the time. Her blood values indicated a form of blood cancer. However, the suspicion was not confirmed after a bone marrow examination. Now she was in the rheumatology department, and she told me her story: a year previously she had suffered from asthma. It seemed unusual to me that asthma should first appear so late in life. However, no one had questioned this until now. After a few months she began to have increasing problems walking. Her hands and arms also became increasingly weaker, so that she soon needed help. She went to her family doctor and two neurologists, but no one had an explanation.
