Granted, we HATE the horrific discomfort that comes with having your period every month. One woman has so severe stomach cramps that she can barely walk, the second feels disintegrated with the world and wants to crawl in bed crying and the third empties the whole refrigerator in a ravenous attack.

Although there are plenty of tried and tested home remedies for the symptoms, you should avoid one of the most popular in the future: alcohol. Although it can temporarily ensure that you no longer notice the pain, it creates a whole host of new problems.

That is what alcohol does to your rule

The following can happen if you consume alcohol during menstruation:

1. Headaches, muscle cramps and indigestion occur

Magnesium is extremely important for the body – and a deficiency can lead to the symptoms mentioned above. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a real magnesium killer and drives the mirror into the abyss. It takes a while until it is balanced again. By then you will probably already have your period stomach cramps behind you, but then you bite into the pillow at night because you now have leg cramps.

2. Your cycle is shifting

So far have you always got your days right on time? That could change if you drink alcohol at the same time. Because this affects the testosterone and estrogen levels and can not only postpone the cycle, but also ensure that the length of the period changes.

3. You get worse abdominal pain

Alcohol has the annoying property of drawing water out of the body – this is also one of the reasons why we have a hangover in the morning after a night of partying. Because dehydration can not only cause the classic headache, but also abdominal pain. Nobody wants this in combination with the general menstruation-related stomach cramps!

And as if all of that is not enough, we shouldn’t resort to alcohol in the time before the days, i.e. while we are struggling with PMS. Because this can make all the classic symptoms of mood swings to tense breasts worse.

And what helps then?

In the case of classic menstrual cramps, hot water bottles in particular help relieve abdominal pain and light (!) Movement to distract people, for example a walk. But diet can also play a role: Make sure you have an adequate supply of magnesium to avoid cramps. Magnesium is found in whole grain rice and nuts, for example.
