Rehabilitation clinics are an indispensable component of our health care system. Their goal: to make patients strong again. How to achieve this.

Sandra Kritzer is an old hand. The 51-year-old is recovering in a rehabilitation facility for the fifth time – she has already been to the neurological rehabilitation clinic in Gailingen near Lake Constance three times. But “recovering” is actually the wrong word. “Training” or even “working hard” is a better fit – the multiple sclerosis patient’s daily schedule seems more than full. After breakfast, it starts: water gymnastics, arm training with an air cushion splint, pedaling on an ergometer, then a conversation with the social services, and finally walking training in the park. Sandra Kritzer is also trying out VR glasses, which the clinic is currently testing. In the 3D world, the patients are supposed to practice, for example, holding their hand so still that a virtual butterfly lands on it. Not so easy with the tremor that shakes Sandra Kritzer’s hand.
