The doctor envisions such an obligation not only in the entire education, care and health sector, which also includes pharmacists, 24-hour nurses and midwives, but also for all body-related professions such as hairdressers, masseurs, hand and foot cosmetics, as she said to the “Kleine Zeitung” (Sunday edition).

As an argument she brought the “social obligation of the individual”. Voluntariness has its limits when it comes to a disease “that has put our economic and social system into crisis mode worldwide,” she emphasized.

In addition, it is about the question of proportionality. “The sting is minor, but the disease is dangerous, and the benefit for the general population is very high,” argued the head of the bioethics commission located in the Federal Chancellery: “Without mandatory vaccination, we would never have eradicated smallpox in the late 1970s.”

She considers it absurd that the federal states can act autonomously on this issue. “I don’t see why it is epidemiologically justifiable that there is an obligation in one federal state and not in the other,” says Druml.

She also considers the involvement of teachers to be essential, after all they are multipliers and should act on the principle of no harm and care for the children. As long as children cannot be vaccinated, everyone who interacts with children has a special responsibility.

The FPÖ immediately answered no: The extension of the compulsory vaccination to professional groups means nothing more than introducing them “through the back door”, criticized their social spokeswoman Dagmar Belakowitsch: “Both employees and employers must finally be protected from these crazy ideas.” The vaccines available on the market did not protect against the spread of infection, argued Belakowitsch. Accordingly, one cannot achieve herd immunity with these vaccines.
