Never heard of silent reflux? That’s what happened to Stephan Schneider (name changed by the editors). For years, the man in his late fifties had been plagued by a cough and a hoarse, stuffy voice, and he had to clear his throat again and again. Over time, he had been to his GP and ENT doctor several times, had seen a specialist for lung diseases and a second for swallowing disorders. No one had been able to help him.
A friend recommended that he try seeing a gastroenterologist. Perhaps his problem was caused by his stomach? And indeed, the doctor made a connection: Schneider was suffering from what is known as silent reflux, the doctor determined.
