Treating swollen feet: Ökotest gives 5 top marks to ice gel

Do your feet swell when you’re on your feet all day? A foot gel is supposed to alleviate the symptoms. Ökotest has investigated whether this works.

A total of 14 different products (including certified natural cosmetics) from drugstores, organic supermarkets, discounters and online retailers were examined more closely by Ökotest. What they all have in common is that the manufacturer promises a cooling effect on the skin. The creams were examined for the substances they contain and the packaging for its environmental friendliness. In the end, five of the foot gels tested received the top rating of “very good” and two were rated “good”. What these are and what home remedies can also be used to treat swollen feet are summarized below.

Foot gel in the test: These creams perform very well

The test winners

A total of five of the 14 foot gels with a cooling effect tested received the best rating from Ökotest. We present three of them to you here:

efasit Ice Gel

The test result of the ingredients in for the feet (and legs) was rated as very good by Ökotest: Neither P EG/PEG derivatives, plastic compounds or other questionable and/or controversial ingredients could be detected in the recipe. The cooling effect is caused by grapefruit extract and menthol.

Balea Foot & Leg Ice Gel

Balea’s own brand also has an ice gel for tired and stressed feet in its range. According to Ökotest, no questionable ingredients or other defects were found in it. According to the manufacturer, mint oil, menthol and camphor provide the desired kick of freshness. The gel also contains allantoin and witch hazel extract.

Fusswohl Cooling Ice Gel

Ökotest came to a similar result (read “very good”) for the cooling ice gel from Fusswohl, a private label from . The active ingredients it contains (menthol, camphor and peppermint oil) are supposed to refresh stressed feet and legs. Allantoin and panthenol, in turn, are supposed to soothe the skin.

Two products receive the overall rating “good”

These products were not considered very good, but still good:

Peclavus Podo Care Foot Gel Cooling

The cooling foot gel from was not awarded the top rating by Ökotest despite the ingredients being considered very good. The reason for this is, on the one hand, criticism of the packaging, and, on the other hand, geraniol and citronello were declared but could not be detected in the laboratory.

Yves Rocher Gel Pieds Apaisant Glacé

The ice cream gel Pieds Apaisant Glacé with soothing mint and mallow was also awarded a “good” rating. The reason it didn’t get the top rating is because the recipe contained plastic compounds. However, no questionable ingredients were detected.

Another tip: Once opened, a foot gel only lasts for six to twelve months. To extend the shelf life, store the tube in the refrigerator.

Treat swollen feet with home remedies

In addition to the classic foot wraps with cold or wet compresses, there are other home remedies that are supposed to help against typical symptoms. One of these is a foot bath with cold water, although you should avoid adding ice cubes. After about ten minutes, your hot and swollen feet should feel better. Alternatively, it can also be helpful to put your legs up so that the accumulated fluid is better drained from the body. Or you can give yourself a foot massage (always in the direction of the heart) – this is supposed to get the slowed blood flow moving again. And last but not least, even if it sounds contradictory, if you have been on your feet all day, more moderate running, also known as walking, or a walk is supposed to help against swollen feet. This is because long periods of sitting or standing often lead to water collecting in the feet.
