There has been another death in Italy due to the violin spider. The south of the country in particular seems to be populated by the animals.
For the second time in a matter of weeks, a person in Italy has died after being bitten by a so-called violin spider. As the news agency Ansa reported, a 23-year-old died on Saturday in a hospital in Bari, southern Italy, of septic shock and organ failure. He was reportedly bitten in the leg by the spider more than a month ago. In July, a 52-year-old policeman in Sicily died after being bitten by a spider of the same species.
Violin spider often found in gardens
According to the World Catalogue of Spiders, the violin spider (Loxosceles rufescens) is found in the Mediterranean region, Asia and North America. It measures only up to 7.5 millimetres and gets its name from a violin-shaped spot on its body. It prefers dry soil, holes in the ground and is often found near houses, especially in gardens.
