Summer penis: Does a man’s penis really swell in the heat?

Summer penis: Does a man’s penis really swell in the heat?

There is a rumor that has been circulating on the Internet for years: Do men really have a bigger penis in the summer? The answer: Yes, but…

34 centimeters – that’s the length of the largest erect penis in the world. At least unofficially. Because its owner, New Yorker Jonah Falcon, did not get an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. The average penis is 13.12 centimeters. Women don’t care about such numbers. Surveys have shown this time and again. Men, on the other hand, often keep a close eye on the size of their best part. So if the penis suddenly appears a size larger, it’s noticeable. That’s exactly what many men want to have observed in themselves, especially when the temperature rises.

Journalist Tracy Moore once coined the term summer penis phenomenon. She reported in 2018 in the now-defunct “MEL Magazine”: “The summer penis is an elusive phenomenon that is subject to the fluctuations of the seasons. No dumbbell can make it bigger, no food can fill it up.” It is a kind of temporary fluctuation in penis size caused by heat. This ensures that the penis can be significantly larger in summer than in winter, when it is known to “retract”. Is this nonsense or do such seasonal fluctuations really exist?

Urologist on the summer penis: “It doesn’t make you more potent”

A call to doctor Axel Merseburger. He is the director of the Urology Clinic at the University Hospital Lübeck and press spokesman for the German Society for Urology. The phenomenon of the summer penis does indeed exist, says the doctor. However, it is rare for patients to present with it, as it is not seen as a pathological condition. “In the heat, many things expand. An iPhone also expands, but because it is only a micrometer, you cannot see it,” he explains. “In the penis, the vessels are widened by the heat, which means more blood flows into it – including into the erectile tissue.”

The penis does not grow in the summer, it swells, and neither to record-breaking size nor permanently. “It is almost like an incipient erection, which makes the penis appear larger,” says Merseburger. “But the men affected do not get a longer penis as a result. When it becomes erect, it is just as large as in winter.” The summer penis therefore only has an effect on “flaccid” penises. And the summer penis does not make a man a better lover. “It does not make you more potent, but it does no harm either,” says the doctor.

The counterpart? The “retracted” winter penis

The opposite phenomenon to the summer penis? In cold weather, the blood vessels and erectile tissue contract, which can give the impression of a smaller penis. “We know this from the sauna,” explains the urologist. “If you jump into the ice water after a sauna session, you can experience the summer and winter effects in quick succession.”
