In the USA, vaccinations are only making slow progress, at the same time the corona numbers are skyrocketing. The US health expert Anthony Fauci warned of a “pandemic of the unvaccinated”.
In the spring, the USA was one of the model students when it comes to vaccinating, but the campaign has now stalled. At the same time, the number of new infections due to the delta variant has been rising again for a few weeks. Almost half of the total population is already fully immunized, but the situation is worsening, especially in states with low vaccination rates.
Now the US health expert Anthony Fauci has again expressed concern about the slow pace of vaccination and the increasing numbers. “We are moving in the wrong direction,” he said on Sunday in an interview with the television station.
Anthony Fauci warns of “unvaccinated pandemic”
The US is in an “unnecessary disaster,” continued Fauci. He himself was “very frustrated” with the behavior of certain groups. A decisive reason for the slowdown in the vaccination campaign is the large number of American vaccination skeptics and refusals. Surveys show that many consider the risk of illness to be lower than that of vaccination – and simply do not trust the government.
The question of vaccination has now become a political question in the US that divides camps further: According to one, the vaccination rate in the districts where many voted for Joe Biden in the presidential election is significantly higher than where the then president Donald Trump received many votes. One comes to the conclusion that significantly more supporters of the Democrats than the Republicans have been vaccinated so far.
Anthony Fauci, who also advises US President Biden, warned of a “pandemic for the unvaccinated”. “So we practically beg people to go out and get vaccinated,” said Fauci.
Vaccination appeals seem to be working
On Sunday, the US authorities reported a total of 15,711 new cases – around 3,600 more than the week before. In Florida, the situation is currently particularly alarming. About a fifth of all cases in the United States are currently recorded there. In some hospitals it is now getting tight again.
Nationwide, the number of admissions is at a relatively low level – but where relatively few people are vaccinated, it rises again much more quickly. But the vaccination appeals from the government and health experts seem at least to be bearing some fruit. In the five states with the highest number of cases – Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Missouri and Nevada – more people than the national average have recently been vaccinated, said government corona coordinator Jeff Zients
In the United States, around 34.4 million people have been infected with Covid-19 to date, and more than 610,800 people have died. In absolute terms, that is more than in any other country in the world. So far, according to data from the CDC health authority, almost 57 percent of the population in the United States has received at least one vaccination and around 49 percent are fully vaccinated.
