What is an FFP2 mask and how do I recognize it?
FFP stands for “Filtering Face Piece”, which translates as “filtering face piece”. Compared to everyday masks, they filter aerosols out of the air better. They not only protect bystanders, but also wearers from dust and viruses – for example the coronavirus. FFP masks are divided into three levels of effectiveness: FFP1 masks let more particles through, FFP3 masks the least. Certified FFP2 masks can be recognized by the CE mark followed by a four-digit number. These are available in pharmacies, drugstores and supermarkets, but in some places also in petrol stations or kiosks. Numerous retailers also offer the masks on the Internet – here in particular, you should pay particular attention to the CE mark when buying.
FFP2 mask: what should you watch out for when wearing it?
The mask should be close to the face. Otherwise the air could flow unfiltered past the mask through small gaps. Since not every face is the same, there are different mask shapes. However, this is of no use to bearded people. The President of the Society for Aerosol Research, Christof Asbach, recommends men with full beards to shave. The mask would not close properly because of the beard. The FFP2 mask would only offer as much protection as a traditional cloth mask. Manufacturers typically sell FFP2 masks as single-use products. A research team from the Münster University of Applied Sciences and the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster has now found out in a test that FFP2 masks can also be used several times. To do this, you should ventilate the mask for seven days before using it again. During this period, the infectious coronaviruses are reduced to an acceptable minimum. Another option is to disinfect in the oven. To do this, the mask must first air dry for 24 hours after wearing. The mask then moves into the oven for one hour at 80 degrees Celsius top and bottom heat.
In which cases are the costs for FFP2 masks covered?
Sometimes individual FFP2 masks cost up to five euros. So they are not exactly cheap. An example of how socially disadvantaged people can be supported: In Bavaria, an FFP2 mask has been mandatory in retail and local public transport since January 18. If you can, you have to get FFP2 protection yourself. The Free State, on the other hand, provides the needy with the masks free of charge. If a mask requirement also applies at the workplace, the employer must make this available to his employees free of charge. This applies to both simple and qualified masks and only applies to the workplace, not to the way to work or private use.
