How often do treatment errors occur in hospitals? Simple question, complicated answer. The poor data situation obscures the problem, experts warn – with consequences for patients.
The list reads like a set of instructions for a hospital horror film. Three women have their ovaries removed by mistake. Eleven people have the lens of the wrong eye replaced. Doctors forget wires, scalpels or other surgical instruments during the operation on 96 patients. And so on. Hundreds of cases, nightmares for patients. Not fiction, but the record of particularly serious medical errors registered in England. Every citizen can view them on the Internet. The British health service NHS publishes such lists together with a comprehensive analysis once a month. So that hospitals can learn from these mistakes and eliminate the causes.
