In the imaginary list of the most popular body parts, feet are likely to occupy a top spot for only a few people. Feet have a bad reputation. They are defamed as square-footed people, fools or sweaty propellers. They are the ones who carry us through life. Nevertheless, they are often and innocently put into stylish sneakers or chic high heels. This makes our feet sick in the long run. Caroline Werkmeister is an orthopedist and foot surgeon at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and has seen a lot of broken feet. Their thesis: Many of today’s foot problems are classic diseases of affluence.
