Mpox virus: First German patient was infected in Rwanda

The new variant of Mpox has arrived in Germany, and an infection in a patient was detected for the first time in Cologne. The man apparently became infected in Rwanda.

The first German patient who became infected with the new variant of the Mpox virus had heterosexual sex in Rwanda before becoming ill. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced, the man was in the East African country from September to early October. A few days after his return to Germany, he developed symptoms typical of Mpox and went to see a doctor.

The Mpox virus of the so-called clade Ib was subsequently detected in Cologne. “The patient is receiving medical care in the hospital in compliance with the recommended isolation measures and is on the mend,” said the RKI.

Risk of infection after this case of Mpox is low in this country

All contacts of the 33-year-old have only a low risk of infection. Overall, the risk of further transmission of the pathogen within Germany is assessed as low. For the transmission of Mpox – previously known as monkeypox – close physical contact is required. Mpox symptoms include a typical skin rash, fever, headache and muscle pain.
