Viruses, bacteria and protozoa cause hundreds of millions of infections every year. There is an urgent need for more effective vaccines against this, calls for the WHO in a report.
The worst times of the corona pandemic appear to be over. Nevertheless, hundreds of millions of people worldwide become ill and die every year from dangerous infections caused by bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Combating this successfully is one of the most important tasks for the coming years and decades, says the World Health Organization (WHO).
The key to this is suitable vaccines and campaigns. In a current publication, the authority presents the 17 most dangerous pathogens against which there is not (yet) sufficient vaccination protection.
The selection is based on eight criteria each. These include, among others, the mortality of children under five, the social and economic consequences of each case of illness, the increase in inequalities and the increase in antibiotic resistance. Below you can see a portrait of some of the pathogens.
