It is often said that sleeping pills are addictive. But not taking them because of their bad reputation can be a mistake, says our columnist Diana Helfrich.
Sleeping pills have a bad reputation: They are addictive, they have strong side effects, and the sleep they give you is not really restful – these are common beliefs. Nevertheless, one could say that they are under-prescribed. At least poor sleep is definitely not overtreated. Not only because many of those affected believe that nothing and no one can help them and do not even seek medical advice. The days when sleeping pills were prescribed carelessly or reflexively are long gone. Word has gotten around that they can cause problems. There is a deep mistrust of these medications, both among doctors and patients.
