When children experience war, it leaves its mark on their genetic makeup, a new study shows. This could also affect their development.
Almost 120 million people were forcibly displaced in 2023. Wars like those raging in Ukraine, the Gaza Strip or Syria have destroyed countless homes, cities and families and forced millions of children to flee. What they have experienced is difficult to process.
A few years ago, medical neuropsychologist Mohammad Khalid Hamza of the Syrian American Medical Society said that the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder in Syrian children far exceeds clinical definitions. The mental, emotional consequences should be in “human devastation syndrome” (translates roughly to “Syndrome of Human Destruction”).
