There is no doctor left in the village
Italian mayor bans residents from being sick

Being sick is officially prohibited: A mayor in Italy responds to the shortage of doctors in the village with a creative order. And hopes that something will change now.
In Italy, a village mayor quickly declared being sick illegal because he could no longer find a doctor for his community of 1,300 people. The mayor of the southern Italian village of Belcastro, Antonio Torchia, justified his new regulation by saying that proper health care was no longer guaranteed. In Belcastro there is no longer even an on-call medical service. The nearest hospital is 45 kilometers away.
Torchia therefore instructed the population in writing to “avoid any illness that requires medical intervention, especially in emergencies, and to rest as much as possible.” Of Belcastro’s 1,300 residents, more than half are of older age – as is now typical in many villages. Italy is one of the countries that suffer particularly from aging.
“Ironic provocation”
The mayor sees his decree as an “ironic provocation” to draw attention to the problem – with success. “I have to say that my order has more impact than the dozens of letters I have sent so far to the provincial health authority and the prefecture,” Torchia said. Now he hopes that conscience will be awakened in both politics and health care.
