Fat is not the same fat. It is particularly unhealthy on the belly and favors heart attacks, strokes and cancer. The good thing: you get rid of it again.

The belly had to go. And not just any, but mine. Because where it was tight and muscular, a curvature now emerged – a little stronger year after year. I still remember the feeling that one in the morning I was wet and naked in front of the mirror after showering, looked at me from the side. How I talked about what I saw for a long time: Oh, it’s okay, I have no overweight. But what was going through my head anyway: is the tummy still harmless – or already unhealthy? This day is now three years ago. Since then I have dealt intensively with bellies – with my own and those from others. There are thick, round, soft, wobble and festivals. And because I wrote in the star and on the struggle with my stomach, people trusted me with their stories – readers, readers, relatives, friends, removed. The stories were similar. Only the number of kilos that was about varied. Sometimes there were three, sometimes fifteen.

Many women and men are plagued with their weight. The desire to get rid of the belly is great. You only have to look around for five minutes in a pedestrian zone in Germany and see: every second is too thick. In the paralyzing months of pandemic, many have increased again. According to statistics, 67 percent of men and 53 percent of women are overweight. Millions suffer from the fact that their middle of the body has become more voluminous in the course of life. And more and more torture themselves with the question: How do I get rid of the excess weight?

Fat is not the same fat

Not only for aesthetic reasons, but above all for health. As a science editor, I know the studies and numbers on belly, fat and health. Women in Germany have an average of 90 centimeters, men of about 100. This is too much for both genders. Women should not have more than 80 centimeters, men no more than 94. With every centimeter, the risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. There is even a connection between abdominal circumference and cancer. Apparently, belly fat triggers processes in the body that make us sick. Long before the body mass index (BMI) shows overweight.

The BMI, which is becoming increasingly clear, is a rather unusable value. Because fat is not the same fat. Whether it harms us depends on where we carry it around with us on the body. Above all, that on the stomach probably triggers a real disease tsunami. What makes this belly fat so dangerous?
