With the cold season it gets full of the sauna again. But you should pay attention to some things. Here are a few tips, because saunas are good for body and mind.
This article first appeared in January 2023.
More than two dozen naked men and women sit on wooden benches around an oven. They all wait for the “power of the forest”. Me too.
A young man comes in and greets with a long -drawn “moin”. It is the sauna champion, he brings us the “power of the forest” – an infusion.
With the start of cold season, the German sauna dabs fill up again, offer warmth in the wet and cold days or relaxation after sport. I also go sweat regularly.
The “power of the forest” consists of a birch sow that the sauna master pours. His tools: a creative cellar and a large compartment.
First he distributes ice on the stones of the hot sauna oven. It hisses and bubbles, suddenly gets warmer. The hot air bangs in my face. Small beads of sweat on my body get bigger, unite, roll down on me. They tickle on the skin. Then the birch water comes. The sauna master distributes the air with his compartment.
Four basic rules for going to the sauna
The whole thing is repeated. The second time it feels even hotter. The air hurts on the skin. I have the feeling that I was close to a fainting. After less than ten minutes I leave the sauna. A look at my fitness watch shows me that I have a pulse of 172. I feel as if I had a half marathon behind me – I’ve never run in life. This forest was too strong for me.
I wonder: how healthy is this actually? Because the rest seems to be the good, yes, they even enjoy it! Do I do something wrong here?
Rolf Pieper led the German Sauna Association for 38 years. Today he is retired, but still works as a judge at the infusion championships. He can tell me how to do it, really sauna bath.
