Modern medicine literally knows no limits. A US surgeon operates a cancer patient on the prostate. Via robotic arm. On another continent.
For the first time, a cancer patient in Africa has been successfully operated on robotic -based – by a surgeon that was 11,000 kilometers away in the USA.
The operation in the CHDC hospital in Angola’s capital Luanda “went well,” said the head of the clinic, Carlos Alberto Masseeca. There the 67-year-old Fernando da Silva was operated on the prostate last Saturday. He was able to leave the hospital three days after the procedure.

The executive surgeon was Vulp Patel from the Global Robotics Institute at the Adventhealth Celebration Hospital in the US state of Florida. “The intervention took place at a distance of almost 11,000 kilometers,” said the clinic. It was the first remote treatment worldwide over such a great distance.
According to the Hospital in Luanda, it was “the first remote -controlled operation in Angola and on the African continent”. A team of surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, engineers and a member of Patel’s team were in the on-site operating room.
Prostate cancer is the most common fatal cancer in men in countries south of the Sahara. Many African countries have only limited opportunities for early detection and specialized surgery. The operation is “great progress – not only technological, but also for worldwide health justice,” said Patel.
