Brazil is sovereign, Bolsonaro responds with Putin in the face of US discomfort

“Brazil is a sovereign country. We had information that some countries would like the event not to take place and some thought that the worst could happen during our presence here,” the ultra-conservative president told reporters, referring to fears of that Russia invades its neighbor.

The relationship between Brazil and the United States has cooled since Republican Donald Trump left the White House, mainly due to criticism by Joe Biden of Bolsonar’s management in the Amazon.

“Our mission here is trade and peace,” Bolsonaro said, highlighting the interest of Brazil, an agricultural power, in Russian fertilizers.

The Russians “obviously have a huge interest in selling fertilizer and we have a huge interest in buying it,” he said.

Bolsonaro He traveled accompanied by his Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Mines and Energy, who discussed various projects with their Russian peers, among them one of “construction of small generating plants of nuclear electrical energy”

The Brazilian president, who this year will most likely seek re-election, emphasized his personal proximity to Putin and “the harmony of Russian values” with Brazilian ones, “especially [los relacionados] with Christianity and the defense of family values”.

The meeting lasted two hours and was “quite productive,” Bolsonaro said.

“Brazil is our main partner in Latin America,” Putin declared for his part, also reporting a “constructive dialogue” that will contribute to “further strengthening Russian-Brazilian relations.”

Unlike what he did with several foreign leaders recently, who sat at the other end of a 20-foot long table during his meetings with Putin, Bolsonaro was only a coffee table apart from his Russian counterpart.

This could be due, according to the Russian media, to the fact that the Brazilian president, known for his controversial positions in the face of the pandemic and who is not vaccinated against the coronavirus, would have undergone a Covid-19 test in Russia.

“I really go back to Brazil with the feeling that [la visita] It has been more than a perfect marriage. I perceived it in the physiognomy, by the way in which I was treated outside the official agenda, that this is also the feeling that [Putin] has from Brazil,” Bolsonaro said.

In their joint statement after the meeting, both countries underlined their “willingness to strengthen strategic collaboration and deepen political dialogue.”

They also highlighted the “significant potential for cooperation” in the field of energy, as well as the complementarities in the oil and gas, energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors.

Bolsonaro, whose country is a member with Russia of the BRICS (along with India, China, South Africa), thanked Putin for his repeated support of Brazil as a strong candidate for a permanent seat on a reformed United Nations Security Council, according to a statement released by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

He also thanked him for the election of Brazil to a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the biennium 2022-2023.

Before leaving for Moscow, Bolsonaro winked at Ukraine and reported that his foreign minister spoke by phone with the Ukrainian foreign minister.

On Thursday, Bolsonaro will travel to Hungary, where he will meet with the prime minister. Victor Orbánanother representative figure of the ultranationalist right that in recent years has made advances in several countries.
