The Ukrainian military command center in the east accused the Russian-backed forces of fire heavy artillery“with particular cynicism”, to the town of Stanitsia-Luganska.
“The shells hit a kindergarten,” he added.
Ukraine has been in conflict with rebels in the east of the country since 2014, a war that has claimed thousands of lives.
“According to preliminary reports, two civilians were injured. Public infrastructure was also damaged. Half of the town was left without electricity,” the Ukrainian military said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba condemned the alleged attack.
“We call on all our allies to quickly condemn this severe violation of the Minsk agreements by Russia in a tense security situation,” he said in reference to a 2014 pact to stop the conflict, after the annexation of the peninsula of crimea.
On the other hand, Russian news agencies reported that the separatist force in Lugansk accused Ukraine of intensifying the fighting.
“In the last 24 hours, the situation on the contact line has worsened significantly,” Yan Leschenko, head of the People’s Militia in the self-proclaimed Republic of Luhansk, told reporters.
“The enemy, by direct orders of the political-military command in Kiev, tries to escalate the conflict“, he assured.

In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov called the allegations of an escalation in Ukraine “disturbing“.
The accusations come as Ukraine and its Western allies warn that Russia has deployed a possible invasion force on the Ukrainian border. US intelligence has said Moscow is seeking to create a pretext to invade Ukraine.
