The Californian research center Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which has been measuring the CO2 concentration in the air in Hawaii since 1958, reported a daily value of 421.29 for February 13. Such a high value has never been measured before.
The Keeling curve is considered the most important environmental data set of the 20th century. Due to the vegetation cycle, it is subject to seasonal variation and reaches its annual high in May. Climate researchers are worried about the increase from year to year. In 2020, the CO2 concentration was around 414 in February and rose to 418 by May. In 2021, the value of 418 was already exceeded in March and rose to almost 420 ppm by May.
Since 1958, US scientists have been measuring the CO2 concentration in the air from the Mauna Loa station in Hawaii. It is the oldest carbon dioxide measuring station in the world. When the investigations began there, the CO2 value was still 317 ppm. With his technical evidence, Charles David Keeling is regarded as the discoverer of the greenhouse gas effect. The increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere means that the earth is increasingly heating up. In addition to carbon dioxide, there are other greenhouse gases such as methane.
In the Paris Climate Protection Agreement in 2016, it was agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees if possible, but at least to less than two degrees compared to the pre-industrial age.
