Mattighofen will become the largest sports stage in the country in the coming days: From Saturday to Tuesday, the 9th state youth gymnastics festival of the ÖTB Upper Austria will take place in the Braunau town community. 700 participants have already registered for the big gymnastics festival, the preparations for the event have been in full swing for several weeks and months, as Roman Breckner, chairman of the organizer association TSV Mattighofen, says in an interview.
“We have never organized such an event of this size in our club history. Now that the preparations are bent in the home straight, there is of course all sorts to do,” says Breckner. For more than a year, the TSV chairman has been working together with his organization team, which consists of 15 people, on the planning for the sports event. More than 150 helpers will be deployed on the four competition days, which are supposed to create the perfect framework for sporting competitions.
Festival of the “short distances”
The active people compete in individual and team competitions in gymnastics, in athletics and swimming. Traditionally, however, musical creativity in the singing and dance competitions as well as the skill of “puzzle” are also in demand. Even if it was a sporty show of strength, the real success would not be reflected in the best times and medals, says Roman Breckner. “The state youth gymnastics festivals are a special experience for the children and adolescents. Anyone who was there at such an event remembers the many joint activities even years later.” Of course, the sporting performance is not irrelevant, but the focus is still on the fun, the exchange among the hundreds of participants and the establishment of sustainable contacts.
These also arise primarily in the common accommodations, in which all participants, including their supervisors, will stay during the competition days. The organization of the sleeping facilities was one of the biggest challenges, as TSV chairman Breckner says. “As far as the room capacities are concerned, we really move in Mattighofen at the border of what is feasible. Fortunately, we were able to complete an uncomplicated cooperation with the schools in our city, so that we could accommodate all participants and supervisors. However, it shouldn’t have been more,” says Breckner with a smile. Thanks to the central location, the state youth gymnastics festival is a festival of the “short distances”.
