“Venezuelan nationals must process a consulted visa to enter national territory before the Costa Rican consulates duly accredited abroad,” except in emergency or exceptional cases, the immigration authority reported in a statement.
“Changes in migration policy worldwide have caused differences in the mobility dynamics of these nationalities (…) for which other countries have adopted the visa application,” the statement details.
In January, Mexico established a similar measure to curb the irregular transit of Venezuelan nationals to the United States, in response to requests from its northern neighbor, after a sharp increase in arrests of citizens of the South American nation fleeing the crisis in his country.
The Directorate of Migration also announced the transit visa for Cubans and Nicaraguans, who already required one to enter Costa Rica, “in order to ensure that the different airlines bound for Europe and the United States can transfer these foreigners in a safe”.
Venezuelans see in the Central American country a suitable destination to flee the economic and political problems in their place of origin. According to a report by the Organization of American States (OAS), up to 2020 nearly 40,000 migrants from the South American nation were registered on Costa Rican soil.
