Western countries continue to tell Russia about scenarios for its “attack” on Ukraine, but this is just a way to “wind up” negotiations on Russian security guarantees. This opinion was expressed on Thursday, February 17, by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Vershinin.
According to him, some countries, including the United States, “helpfully suggest some kind of military scenarios” of an alleged Russian attack on Ukraine.
The diplomat pointed out that information aggression and statements about the Russian military threat are needed for “cover”.
“Therefore, the goal for us is obvious – there is a desire to wind up the conversation on long-term legally binding security guarantees for our country,” Vershinin said during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that Russia is ready for a serious dialogue, and not for its “imitation”.
Earlier, on February 17, it was reported that the United States Ambassador to Moscow, John Sullivan, received a response from the Russian Foreign Ministry on security proposals. In particular, the statement states that the deployment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on its territory does not and cannot affect the fundamental interests of the United States.
The fact that the United States received a response from Russia on security guarantees became known on the same day. It was reported that the US Ambassador to Moscow on February 17 visited the building of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov said that Moscow had prepared a 10-page document outlining its reaction to the US and NATO responses. According to the minister, the reaction of Washington and the alliance is negative, but in some aspects the position of the White House coincides with Moscow’s proposals. The head of the department also noted that the United States and its allies in the alliance are ready for further negotiations on security guarantees.
On the same day, the British Ministry of Defense presented the route of the movement of Russian troops, who would allegedly invade the territory of Ukraine. The map shows several arrows indicating the directions of the strikes that Russia is supposed to inflict. At the first stage, according to the British, Kiev will be attacked, and then the ring around the Dnieper will be closed throughout Eastern Ukraine.
On February 15, the tabloid The Sun and the Mirror newspaper published materials that the attack would allegedly take place on the night of February 16. After the invasion did not take place, the publications edited the articles.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on “US and British media outlets Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Sun to announce the schedule of “invasions” for the coming year, in order, as the diplomat joked, to understand how to plan a future vacation.
Speculation by Western politicians and media representatives about allegedly planned Russian aggression against Ukraine also outraged readers of the British newspaper Daily Mail. They called on the participants of the information campaign to issue rebuttals to their accusations and to apologize.
At the same time, against the background of the spread of rumors about the “invasion” by the Western media and politicians, the situation in Donbass escalated by February 17. As reported in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, shelling from the Armed Forces of Ukraine has become more frequent, military equipment and personnel of the Ukrainian security forces are being pulled to the line of contact.
