Austrian archaeologists have been diging in Ephesos and thus in one of the five largest cities in the Roman Empire. The history of settlement, which is documented here, extends much further, namely 9,000 years back – until human settlement becomes. With the “Koressische Gate,” one of the most important projects in this year’s excavation year, the long -term foundation history is a facet.
Third city gate localized
Archaeologist Martin Stescal came across the “Koressische Gate” in a departure at the foot of the Panayirdag mountain, on the northeastern edge of the former urban area. But is it actually the gate mentioned in an inscription from AD 104 AD “Yes, I think we have solved this question,” says the Ephesos pattern leader with a view to already exposed marble blocks: “With a trained look, the former city gate can already be seen well.”
