As early as 1948, the sports enthusiast was an important member of the foundation of the Union Thalheim sports club on a voluntary basis, where he held the position of honorary chairman in the football section until the end. An ambitious soccer player himself, Johann Muckenhuber made a significant contribution to the sports facilities in Thalheim and wanted to reach the youth in the community with sport. “My father was very popular with the boys and was active until the end,” says his son Hansjörg. “Sportunion was his baby.”
Professionally, Johann Muckenhuber devoted himself entirely to interior design and, at a young age, completed the master craftsman’s exams to become a wallpaper hanger and painter. For many decades before his retirement, he worked for the interior decorator Tikal. “Although he was already retired by then, his apprentices always asked him for advice,” his son recalls.
In addition, Muckenhuber was already involved in the SPÖ in the municipality of Thalheim. “For as long as I can remember, my father has been active in the community. Especially in his position as housing officer, he was always on the road a lot,” says Hansjörg Muckenhuber. In 1987 he finally took over the municipal board, from 1991 he was in the office of vice mayor. For his activities he was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor of the market community. Thalheim’s Mayor Andreas Stockinger will always have fond memories of Muckenhuber: “I am very grateful to him for everything he has done for Thalheim. With his dedication to sport, he has demonstrated his foresight.”
Sport has always been an important connection for the Muckenhuber family. Because that’s exactly where – on the sports field – Johann and his wife Juliana met and fell in love more than 60 years ago. Son Hansjörg also played football for years.
On February 2, the Thalheim sportsman’s heart finally stopped beating at the age of 90 after a short illness. Today, Friday, from 1 p.m., the farewell will take place at the Thalheim parish church.
