Trudeau pledges support for protests in Canada from the US and other countries

Trucker-organized protests against coronavirus restrictions in Ottawa are illegal and funded from abroad, in particular by the United States. This was announced on Thursday, February 17, by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a speech in the country’s parliament.

“These illegal blockades are actively fueled by individuals from the United States and other countries of the world,” he said.

The prime minister stressed that he is opposed to the use of physical force against protesters, but the decision on this issue should be made by the police. According to him, the demonstrators pose a threat to the Canadian economy and trade relations with partners.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland announced that the country’s authorities began to freeze the bank accounts of protesters.

She also noted that the Canadian authorities consider the provisions of a special law on emergency situations (ES) to be the rationale for the measures taken. They have already touched two protesters.

Also on Thursday, it became known that the Ottawa police detained one of the organizers of demonstrations in Ottawa, Chris Barber. In addition to him, the police detained several other people.

A day earlier, Canadian political analysts told Izvestia that the crisis associated with a multi-day blockade by Canadian truckers of a highway on the US border would not have serious political consequences for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The latest poll by Maru Public Opinion shows that 80% of Canadians support neither the cause nor the methods of truckers, experts said. Two-thirds of the country’s residents are in favor of using military force to remove trucks and other items used for illegal occupation of territories.

On February 14, Trudeau announced that the government of Canada, for the first time in the history of the country, is ready to use the emergency law to stop protests against coronavirus restrictions carried out by truckers.

Large-scale protests against covid restrictions in Ottawa began on January 29. The action was launched by Canadian truckers. Several dozen cars and trucks arrived in the city.
