Stanytsia Lugansk is one of the towns located along the so-called “line of contact” in the east of Ukraine, more precisely on the border that separates the self-proclaimed states of Lugansk and Donetsk from the areas controlled by the Government.
The sound of the bombs was heard from this town, which yesterday was the target of several separatist shells. One of them fell on a nursery school, although there were no victims. These bombings intensify the tension between Russia and Western countries, which fear an invasion of Ukraine by Moscow, which has deployed almost 150,000 soldiers on the border.
Ukraine and several Western countries have accused Russia of seeking a pretext to invade their neighbor and these growing clashes between the Ukrainian army and separatists could be, according to them, the perfect excuse.
In this context, the spokesman for the People’s Militia of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic (RPL, pro-Russian), Ivan Filiponenkostated today that the tension on the line of contact in Donbass “drastically increased.”
“The situation in the line of contact is drastically tense”Filiponenko said, adding that the Ukrainian Army systematically opens fire on the territory of the RPL, the Russian news agency Sputnik reproduced.
According to the spokesman, these violations of the armistice are intended to provoke the People’s Militia to return fire and thus “create a pretext for the start of Ukrainian aggression in Donbass.”
Instead, Ukraine’s defense minister, Alexei Reznikovtried to lower the tension in that region. “We are in no way underestimating the threat, but we consider the possibility of a major escalation as low against the possibility of a general invasion of Ukraine.”Reznikov said in his speech in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament), picked up Sputnik.
Since April 2014, Ukraine has carried out an operation against the militias in Donbass, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics were proclaimed, in response to the violent change of government that occurred in February of the same year.
The Minsk Agreements -Belarus-, signed in September 2014 and February 2015, laid the foundations for a political solution to the conflict, but have not led to its cessation so far.
The hostilities have left more than 14,000 dead to date, according to UN estimates.
