During preparatory work for the redesign of the town square in Pregarten, archaeologists came across the remains of the former St. Anna chapel. Even before the start of the redesign of the square, the Federal Monuments Office had ordered sample excavations to check whether the remains of the old St. Anna chapel could still be found under the asphalted parking lots on the south side of the town square. In fact, foundations were uncovered during these test digs with Heinz Gruber, archaeologist from the Federal Monuments Office.
A more extensive archaeological investigation of the excavation site is now to be carried out. The Pregartner municipal council commissioned this immediately in its meeting on Thursday. The archaeologist will shortly be surveying the remains of the church, documenting their location, height and other details. “A rapid implementation of this documentation is necessary so that the work on the redesign of the town square, which will begin shortly, is not hindered,” says Pregartner Mayor Fritz Robeischl.
As soon as this work is completed, all remains of the foundations of the chapel, which would hinder the construction work, can be removed. The required substructure for the parking spaces in the southern area of the town square will then be erected.
