Technical defect caused fire in sawmill

The 47-year-old owner of the sawmill in Senftenbach (Ried im Innkreis district) noticed the fire around 6:45 a.m. When she arrived at the workplace, thick smoke was already coming from the sawing hall. The woman drove to the nearby fire station and pressed the fire alarm button. In the meantime, workers from the sawmill had arrived and tried to contain the flames using four hand-held fire extinguishers.

The Senftenbach and Weilbach fire brigades were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the area of the trimming system. This prevented the flames from spreading to the other parts of the production hall.

A bearing damage on a screw conveyor shaft is likely to have triggered the fire, the investigations by the police and experts revealed. Hot parts of the storage cage fell to the ground and ignited the sawdust. A smoldering fire broke out during the night, which spread under the trimming system and damaged parts of the system. The amount of damage is in the low five-digit euro range. No one was injured, police said on Friday afternoon.
