In the middle of the customs dispute with the United States, the EU has announced a “political agreement” with Indonesia via a free trade agreement. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen named the agreement when visiting Indonesia Prabowo Subianto on Sunday in Brussels “a big step in this partnership”. Both sides had negotiated on a free trade agreement for almost ten years. Prabowo spoke of a “breakthrough” in Brussels.
The Commission President rated the agreement with the raw material -rich Southeast Asian country as a positive signal in view of increasing trade disputes worldwide. “We live in turbulent times and when economic uncertainty meets geopolitical inconsistency, partners like us have to move closer together,” said von der Leyen with a view of Indonesia.
