A 64-year-old from the Urfahr area is said to have dozed off at the wheel of her car when she and her husband were traveling on the west autobahn in the direction of Salzburg. The police announced on Friday evening.
In the municipality of Sankt Georgen im Attergau (Vöcklabruck district), the car left the road and drove to the right onto an embankment. The car overturned and was thrown back onto the A1, where the car, lying on its roof, slid across the roadway. Only after the vehicle had touched the concrete center guard rail did it come to a standstill in the left lane.
The driver and her 65-year-old husband were injured so badly that they had to be taken to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Vöcklabruck with the Martin 3 rescue helicopter after first aid by the emergency doctor. The volunteer fire brigades of St. Georgen and Attersee came to the clean-up work.
