The White House accused the Russian Federation of organizing cyber attacks on Ukrainian banks

Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Ann Nyberger said that Washington considers Russia to be guilty of organizing recent cyber attacks on Ukrainian banks and networks of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

According to her, the Russian authorities “are responsible for large-scale attacks on Ukrainian banks this week.”

“The US government believes that cyber operators from Russia likely carried out attacks on the Ukrainian government, including on military and other critical networks,” she said at a February 18 briefing in charge of cybersecurity.

In his allegations, Nyberger relies on “technical information that links the GRU infrastructure to a large amount of data transmitted to IP addresses and domains in Ukraine.”

The White House also said that they helped the country to eliminate the consequences of a cyber attack.

On February 15, the Information Security Center of Ukraine announced a DDoS attack on the websites of the Ministry of Defense, the armed forces, the state-owned Privatbank and Oschadbank. Later, Privatbank announced the elimination of the consequences of a DDoS attack and the resumption of the stable operation of its systems, while not excluding the possibility of further attacks.

It was noted that the attack was carried out for more than five hours on various resources from foreign and Ukrainian addresses.

In Ukraine, at the same time, it was admitted that Russia could allegedly be behind the attack. No evidence was provided.

On the same day, the American newspaper The Washington Post wrote that the Russian authorities were involved in hacker attacks on military, energy, transport, financial and other critical computer networks in Ukraine. However, the sources of the newspaper again did not provide evidence for such statements.

In turn, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Russia has nothing to do with cyber attacks in Ukraine.

On February 9, it was reported that US senators are proposing to add to the bill on sanctions against the Russian Federation the possibility of introducing restrictions “for cyberattacks” on Ukraine.

To pass the bill, Democratic senators need the support of Republicans, who, in turn, do not agree with the provision of the bill, which states that sanctions can only be imposed in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, since, in their opinion, the United States should use these measures preventively.
