Forest fires recently raged around Los Angeles.

The northern edge of the gorge, the so-called North Rim, remains “closed for all visitors until October 15,” said the park administration in the US state of Arizona on Monday. However, the southern edge, which is far more popular with tourists, remains accessible.

On Friday, more than 500 visitors and national park workers were evacuated from the northern edge of the Grand Canyon due to a spreading forest fire. The fire had been triggered by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm on July 4th. Dryness and unpredictable wind ensured that the flames spread quickly and made the work of the fire brigade. On Monday there was a dense cloud of smoke over the gorge.
