According to Soviet media, it is the Druzhba pipeline connecting Russia with several of the former Soviet Union satellites in Eastern and Central Europe.
According to the Russian agency, a second explosion occurred in Lugansk after the one in the pipeline, but its origin was not specified either.
The Druzhba pipeline is the longest in the world. It was built in the Soviet Union in 1964 to transport oil from central Russia to points as far as 4,000 kilometers to the west.
The name “Druzhba” means “friendship” and alludes to the fact that the pipeline was built to supply oil to the most energy-hungry western regions of the Soviet Union, former Eastern Bloc socialist allies and Western Europe. Today it is the most important artery for the transport of Russian (and Kazakh) oil throughout Europe.
