The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) received a second batch of military aid from Canada, which includes rifles, machine guns with optical sights and equipment. This was announced on Saturday, February 19, in the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on Facebook.

“Today we received military assistance in the form of sniper rifles, assault rifles, machine guns, night vision and surveillance equipment, and military equipment. This is the second aircraft of the Royal Canadian Air Force that arrived in Ukraine with military assistance on board,” said Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov.

Also, the Ministry of Defense noted that at present, joint training and training with Ukrainian and Canadian military personnel are being held in the Lviv region.

The first transport aircraft with non-lethal weapons from Canada was sent to Ukraine on February 4.

Later, on February 14, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would provide $7.8 million ($6.1 million) worth of lethal weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

In addition, Trudeau noted that Canada will allocate an additional $500 million (approximately $390 million) to support the economic stability of Ukraine.

Against the backdrop of widespread speculation about Russia’s allegedly impending invasion of Ukraine, Western countries have increased its military support.

So, on January 21, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Twitter that Canada had allocated $120 million to Ukraine as support.

The Russian side has repeatedly denied accusations of possible aggression and pointed out that the militarization of Ukraine leads to an aggravation in the Donbass. On January 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia was not going to start a war with Ukraine, and Western countries and the United States were “hysterically” developing the topic of a threat to Ukraine from the Russian Federation instead of forcing Ukraine to comply with the Minsk agreements.

At the same time, the situation on the contact line in Donbass escalated on February 17. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including with heavy weapons.
