About 150 protesters were detained in Ottawa in a day

Canadian police detained about 150 people over two days who took part in protests against restrictions imposed in the country to combat the spread of coronavirus. This was reported on February 19 by the press service of the department.

According to the latest data, on Saturday 38 cars were evacuated during the operation to clean up the city center, the number of detainees approached fifty.

“Today (Saturday. – Ed.) 47 people were detained, evacuated [из центра] 38 vehicles,” the Metropolitan Canadian Police said on Twitter.

A day earlier, it was reported that on the streets of Ottawa, police detained more than 100 people who took part in protests organized by truckers on Friday.

In addition, officers reported attacks by protesters and attempts to take away their weapons. It was noted that the demonstrators began to show aggression, despite the calls of the police to voluntarily stop illegal activities and leave the protest area. The vast majority of demonstrators did not take the opportunity to leave, even under threat of detention.

On February 17, two organizers of demonstrations in Ottawa, Chris Berbere and Tamara Leach, were detained.

A few days earlier, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the government of Canada, for the first time in the history of the country, is ready to use the emergency law to stop protests against coronavirus restrictions carried out by truckers.

Earlier, to confront the protesters, the Ottawa police requested and received reinforcements from the federal police of Canada and departments from other regions. Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly stressed that law enforcement officers are considering all options for ending the truckers’ protest in the Canadian capital.

Large-scale protests against covid restrictions in Ottawa began on January 29. The “Freedom Convoy” was launched by truckers in Canada to express their opposition to the requirement to vaccinate truck drivers crossing the US-Canadian border.
