Symptoms and courses of neurodermatitis can vary greatly – from minimal manifestations such as dry lips in winter or inflamed fingertips to dry, itchy skin. “Lubrication, lubrication, smear – the right skin care can often do a lot,” says Wolfram Hötzenecker, board member of the Department of Dermatology and Venerology at the Kepler University Hospital, in the podcast.
Oönachrichten: How often does neurodermatitis actually occur?
Hötzenecker: Neurodermatitis, also called atopic dermatitis, is very common in Austria. About 5 to 10 percent, if not more, suffer from the population, although the form can vary greatly – from very light to very heavy forms.
How is neurodermatitis typically showing?
The disease manifests itself through eczema, itchy and a circulation of itching, scratching and inflammation. Initially, it often occurs in infancy, for example with eczema on the cheeks, later in the course that often shifts to the bend or stretch pages of the limbs, right up to dry, cracked skin in adulthood.
Conversely: what is not neurodermatitis?
Many eczema look similar, but have different causes, for example a contact allergy or a hand eczema through frequent washing. Neurodermatitis can be recognized by the age of those affected, typical of the form and often also the connection with other allergies.
