The finals of the indoor fistball Bundesliga took place in the sold-out district hall of Vöcklabruck on Saturday. The men’s Union Tigers Vöcklabruck played against Freistadt as the defending champions, and the spectators got to see a high-class final.
The favored hosts got off to a good start and, as scheduled, took a 2-0 lead. Freistadt didn’t let that deter them, grew stronger and managed to equalize – led by the strong captain Jean Andrioli in attack. Even after the set break, the encounter continued at eye level. The Mühlviertler presented, the Tigers around world fistballer Karl Müllehner followed suit and after a great series in the finish they took the lead again. The sixth round started with several lead changes, from the middle of the sentence Vöcklabruck then took over the command. With a strong defense and a perfect pass to attacker Karl Müllehner, who repeatedly found a gap in the Freistadt defense, the hosts pulled away and immediately converted the first match ball to the state championship title.
For Tigers captain Jakob Huemer, the improved stability in the pass in the finish was the key to the hard-earned victory. “Freistadt held up really well today, and to be honest I didn’t know how it would turn out today at 2-2,” admitted Huemer after the final whistle. “Thank God we had the necessary calm in the team after the break to successfully defend the title.”
As a representative of the host team, Huemer also addressed the 300 fans at the end: “It’s so nice that we can finally play in front of such a great crowd again. Thanks to the fans of all finalists, you created a great atmosphere!”
The women’s title went to Union Nußbach, who threw the girls of the ASKÖ Laakirchen paper out of the race in the semifinals. The Papergirls from Laakirchen still ended up in third place and came home from Vöcklabruck with bronze medals.
