“Thanks to our better understanding of the virus and successful vaccination program, we can now move from government intervention to personal responsibility,” Johnson said in a statement released last night.
The British Executive thus wants to relegate the responsibility to the citizens, whose care “should preserve, as with all infectious diseases such as the flu”added the note.
“Coronavirus is not going to suddenly go away and we have to learn to live with this virus and continue to protect ourselves without restricting our freedoms”Johnson continued, the DPA news agency reported.
“We have built strong protections against this virus over the last two years through the release of vaccines, tests, new treatments and the best scientific understanding of what this virus can do,” he said.
On the other hand, the British Executive is keeping the door open for contingency measures “to resist if necessary”, as well as greater testing capacity or vaccine programs to respond to new variants.
The announcement provoked skepticism in the opposition, which criticizes that Johnson “is declaring victory before the war ends”, in an attempt to distract attention after the scandals over the parties held at his official residence in full confinement.
“The government must publish the evidence behind this decision, so that the public can have faith that it is being taken with the national interest in mind,” Labor MP Wes Streeting told The Guardian newspaper.
