The OÖN have put together a few tips that you can use to discover new worlds together with children, bring variety to everyday life or simply visit a house that is teeming with tricky puzzles. Such is the initiative “Mühlviertler Alm Denken” with its Escape Rooms in Bad Zell. You have one hour to solve the riddles surrounding a missing will, a missing hiker on the pilgrimage route, or a “murdered woman”.
While wind and thaw have thoroughly cleaned away the snow in the lower elevations of the Mühlviertel, there is still enough of it in the northern communities to tackle a snowshoe hike, for example, or to enjoy the landscape on a horse-drawn sleigh ride.
A very special experience for families is a llama or alpaca hike – at any time of the year. The calming effect and steady walking make llamas and alpacas the perfect companions. On the guided excursions you will learn interesting facts about the animals and trudge together through the beautiful winter hills of the Mühlviertel. The day ends with a campfire and a hot drink.
Speaking of animals: A visit to the zoo in winter opens up completely new perspectives on the animals that live here.
Should it ever get too uncomfortable outside, you can do something good for yourself in one of the local indoor pools.
A trip to the zoo
Altenfelden zoo and Walding zoo: open every day
The Altenfelden animal park is located in the heart of the Upper Mühlviertel and is an experience for the whole family. The privately run zoo is home to 213 different animal species. The diversity of species ranges from the small Ural owl to wolves, zebras and even Barbary apes.
The Tiergarten Walding is also a popular destination for nature lovers, animal lovers and especially for families with children. Many of the animals – from lions to domestic cats – can be observed up close.
Diverse museum world
Museums: always worth a visit
The Mühlviertel offers a very special variety of museums: from the Villa Sinnenreich in Rohrbach to the Haslacher Museums and the Bad Leonfelden School Museum to the Blaudruckmuseum in Gutau or the Clam Castle Museum.

Throughout the Mühlviertel there is a suitable specialist exhibition for almost every area of interest.

Enjoying nature and sport on the cross-country ski run
Extensive network of trails from Schöneben to Liebenau
The Mühlviertel has an extensive network of cross-country trails that still guarantee the best conditions for outdoor winter sports at higher altitudes.

In Schöneben, at the foot of the Sternstein or in the Liebenau winter sports arena, beginners are just as right as skating specialists.
Another tip for families is a visit to the ice rink in Tragwein.
Small, fine cinema enjoyment
Away from the big centers: special holiday schedules
Whether cinema at the table in Ottensheim or a cozy cinema feeling in Bad Leonfelden, the small cinemas away from the central area should not be underestimated.

The Lichtspiele in Katsdorf always have an interesting program ready. The Stadtkino Grein or the Freistadt cinema also offer cinema enjoyment. There are sometimes additional performances during the holidays.
