Large deployment for the rescue workers in the early morning hours of Wednesday 500 meters inside the Great Sonnstein: A serious work accident had occurred around 5:20 a.m. on the construction site of the pumped storage power plant in Ebensee (Gmunden district). Five fire brigades from the area were alerted under the keyword “person under vehicle”, and the red cross, emergency helicopter and police moved in.
According to the police report, two workers were pressed against the tunnel wall by an approximately 12 -ton, mobile lifting platform. The 50-year-old Hungarian and his 48-year-old colleague from Slovakia suffered serious injuries. It was taken care of by the emergency doctor and then brought to the Wels Clinic and the Salzkammergut Clinic Vöcklabruck by helicopter. A 37-year-old Bosnian suffered slight injuries and also had to be treated in a hospital.

The police have now investigated the cause of the accident. The scene of the accident has already been examined by employees of the labor inspectorate. Since a technical ailment cannot be excluded, an expert was requested from the Wels public prosecutor.
Large construction site inside the Sonnstein
The construction work for the huge project has been running since spring 2024. Energie AG is building a pumped storage power plant inside the Great Sonnstein for 450 million by the end of 2027. Around 1,500 workers are in use on the large construction site.

The 170 megawatt power plant is an important building block for Upper Austria’s goal of producing electricity from renewable energies until 2030. It will deliver electricity like a battery if hydropower, wind and solar energy cannot cover the need – and otherwise store the energy.
