Beijing includes fertility treatments in state coverage due to the birth crisis

A total of 16 medical services that use information technology Assisted reproduction (TRA) will be covered by the city’s state insurance from March 26, in a move to “take proactive measures to support fertility,” according to the Beijing Daily.

New reproductive coverage in Beijing could help cut costs and benefit lower-income couples who want children and those without access to private health insurance.

Official data showed China’s birthrate fell to a record low in 2021, continuing a downward trend that led the national government last year to start allowing couples to have up to three children.

China to work toward ‘proper’ birth ratePremier Li Keqiang said at the start of Parliament’s annual meeting in March last year.

China faces what experts call a “demographic ticking bomb” as its elderly population increases while its workforce shrinks due to declining births, in part due to the one-child policy. which was in place for about four decades before being removed in 2016.

China will raise the legal retirement age “in a phased manner,” Li said last year.
